Travel To Turkey

Resources For Holidays In Turkey

A travel to Turkey leads into a country with an ancient and cultural rich heritage.

The line formed by the Bosporus, the Sea of Marmara and the Dardanelles is recognised as the border between Europe and Asia. This fact gives the Republic of Turkey an exceptional geo-strategic weight. During the First World War the Dardanelles gained an unforgettable status with the Gallipoli Campaign when Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed there. Still commemorated each year on the 25th April with ANZAC Day a public holiday and remembrance ceremonies.

By area Turkey is almost three times the size of New Zealand. Borders are shared with eight countries: to the west Greece, Bulgaria to the north-west, Georgia lies in the north-east, while Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Iran mark the east, followed by Iraq and Syria in the south-east. The Mediterranean Sea sweeps the shores in the south and the Aegean Sea to the west while the Black Sea is in the north.

The country has a population of about 72.5 million inhabitants. Around 3.8 million of these live in the capital city Ankara. The largest city is Istanbul with 12.8 million inhabitants. Istanbul went through some name adjustments in history. Former names were Byzantium and Constantinople. Its historic places became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1985.
