United Mexican States
A travel to Mexico leads to the southern part of North America.
The United Mexican States and the Unites States share a border of more than 3100 km with the four states California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. About half the border length is drawn by the Rio Grande as the river is called in the United States or in Mexican Rio Bravo del Norte. It reaches from the Gulf of Mexico in the east to Ciudad Juarez. Thereafter the border is lined out by natural and artificial marks until it finally concludes in the west with the Pacific Ocean. The Central American countries Guatemala and Belize form the border to the south while the south east borders the Carribbean Sea.
Mexico City, with about 9 million inhabitants, is capital and largest city of the country. Population estimates, in July 2010, surpassed 112 million spread over 1,972,550 square kilometre.
Some of the oldest and most advanced civilizations that take credit for many inventions in areas like architecture, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and theology are rooted there. These civilizations flourished about 4,000 years before the Spanish conquerors arrived in 1521. With them came illnesses unknown to this land that took millions of lives. Since 1821 the independence of Mexico from Spain is recognized. Today Spanish is the official language and 62 regional languages are recognized.
Tourism is one of the strong sectors in their economy. Over 21 million tourists travel to Mexico each year and indulge the renowned cuisine, and culture as well as the long tradition in arts. On the world scale the country ranks on the fifth place with 29 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. All in all there is plenty to get curious and venture out to Mexico vacations.
