Spain has two groups of Spanish Islands that are autonomous communities and form three provinces. The Balearic Islands located east of Spain in the west of the Mediterranean Sea and the Canary Islands lying 100 km west opposite of the Sahara in Marocco.
The Balearic Islands represent one Spanish province with the capital Palma. The four largest inhabited islands Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza, and Formentera are popular tourist destinations.
The Canaries are organised in two provinces and is formed by seven inhabited islands Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, and the islets La Graciosa, Alegranza, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste and Isla de Lobos. Of these the largest and most populated one is Tenerife with the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
