Do you have NZ bird photos, you would love to show off?

Pied Shag

The sea bird carries the Maori name kauruhiruhi. Observing this native dweller is a good sign in regards to the water quality. It prefers clean water. With its 81 cm it gives up an impressive sight throning like in the photo on a rock just of the coast.

Crown and upperparts are black while the underparts and the sides of the face are white. Remarkable are a yellow dot beside a bluish eye. The bill shows a grey tone and the feet black. Other favourite places to roost apart from rocks in the middle of water are in particular the pohutukawa tree and on sandy beaches.

We were lucky to see the bird at the east coast just above Long Bay and on Whatipu beach on the west coast towards Manukau Harbour. Feeling secure in the middle of the water it was easier to take a photo.
