The freshwater Lake Waihola is located alongside Highway No. 1 in the Otago region. It is a shallow lake with a maximum length of six kilometres. This fact is responsible for its Maori given name. Waihola translated means spreading waters.
Surrounding wetlands make the lake area home to many species of wading birds. East of the lake a small settlement is a base for fishing, water skiing, and yachting which makes it a popular daytrip for holiday makers staying in the forty kilometre distant Dunedin. Dunedin is the principal city of Otago and the second largest city in the South Island.
Here are some suggestions to explore for a place to stay in Dunedin on your New Zealand travel
. The city offers a wide selection on Hotels and Lodges
. Budget stays like the YHA Dunedin, Manor House Backpackers , or Penny's Backpackers are found and booked best at HOSTELWORLD
