The Tui Bird
One of the first bird songs announcing the new day starting around an hour before sunrise is the song of the tui birds. The bird is endemic to New Zealand.
His feathers appear black, depending on sunlight angle they shine iridescently in metallic green. Around his neck thin wiry feathers form a collar. His white throat tuft is recognizable from far.
Usually they appear in pairs or small family groups. Exceptions are areas with sufficient food supply. New Zealand flax and kowhai trees in full bloom sure attract larger groups.
