The west coast beach Karekare became famous in 1993 with the movie "The Piano" by Jane Campion.
Overall it is a destination popular in many aspects. Beach lovers indulge especially at low tide a vast stretch of black sand beach opening up to the south in direction to Whatipu. Hikers seek the valley as starting point for a hiking trip up on the ridges following the coast or through New Zealand bush.
During summer visitors enjoy bodyboarding, surfing, skimming, kiting and water and beach activities on a patrolled beach.
