Mountains and prairie are the features of Montana vacations. Montana originated from the Spanish word for mountain. Located in the mountainous west are 77 by name defined ranges that belong to the Rocky Mountains. Prairie and plains make up the rest of the state. This is about 60% of the total land mass of 376,980 square kilometres. In the middle part a number of island ranges interrupt the plains.
By area Montana comes 4th with a population just below the 1 million mark the state has an extreme low population density. Helena the capital city is home to about 26 thousand people and the largest city Billings to just over 100 thousand. The eastern economy circles around ranching and wheat farming as well as around oil and coal. Meanwhile the mountainous west lives on lumber, tourism, and mining.
The state borders to the north Canada. Idaho flanks the west and Wyoming the south. To the east the states North Dakota and South Dakota are found.
