Thinking of Italian vacations, sunny and dry beaches at the Mediterranean and the Adriatic Sea jump to mind. In the same manner history and architecture rich cities nurture our imagination. The complete opposite to a young country like New Zealand where often landscape, untamed nature, and adventure are in the centre of attention. Italy has the largest amount on historic monuments, about forty-four, listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites.

There is Rome biggest city and capital. It takes a fundamental place in Christianity with the Pope residing in Vatican City, a city state, at its side. Pilgrims and tourist alike seek this historic place.

International designer including Armani, Gucci, Prada, and Versace have their headquarters in Milan one of the world fashion and design centres. Sure enough Milan’s extravagant boutiques are visited on shopping sprees on Italian holidays.

Medieval Florence represented the centre of European trade. Today cultural and heritage tourism is flourishing for its riches on art and architecture.

Whereas Venice, the "City of Bridges" or the "City of Water", stretches over more than 100 smaller islands in the Venetian saltwater lagoon. It is situated along the Adriatic Sea between the mouths of the river Po and the river Piave. For many honeymooners it describes romantic bliss to glide down in a gondola the Venetian Grand Canal.

Italy is a peninsula in the south of Europe, shaped like a boot. Sicily and Sardinia are the largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea and are part of the country. The East Coast is described by the Adriatic Sea. To the north Italy shares borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia.

In numbers Italy has an area of about 301 thousand square kilometre, with a population exceeding 60 million.
