Island Vacations in the Caribbean Sea

As part of the Greater Antilles archipelago the Dominican Republic travel leads to the second largest Island, Hispaniola. To the west is the largest Island of this group in the Caribbean Sea, Cuba and to the east Puerto Rico.

The 76,480 square km large island Hispaniola is shared by two countries, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The latter takes in about 48,442 square kilometres of the total land with a population of about 10 million Dominicans after the 2009 estimate. Spanish is the official language.

The largest city with about 2.5 million habitants after 2010 and capital city is Santo Domingo. Santo Domingo was founded in 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus. Since then it has been in the Americas the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement.

Cultural elements like food, religion, music, and family structures are influenced by colonists coming from Spain, Africans, and Taino natives. Of this background many words appear in conversations that became part of the Dominican Republic.

The island is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean with its warm maritime climate that shows little change in its mild temperatures from 26 °C. The only difference is an increase of rainfall, storms, and hurricanes between June and October.
