The modest beginnings of the museum were in 1852 in a small farm cottage in an Auckland suburb. Since 1929 the museums sit on the hill tops of the Auckland Domain. The hill is known by Maori people as Pukekawa. Over time the significant heritage shell of the museum extended twice to adjust to present demands. The last period of continuous twelve years of refurbishment finalised in 2006.
The first New Zealand museum accommodates the story of land and people and their place in the South Pacific, their losses in war, their artistic achievements.
